Otto von Emmich joined the Prussian Army in 1866. He saw action during the Franco-Prussian war in 1870-1871. In 1909 he became a general of infantry and he was put in charge of the Tenth Army Corps at Hanover. On 27 Jan 1912 he was ennobled.

At the start of the First world War he succeeded in capturing the strongly fortified ciy of Liège on 7 Aug 1914. At the same day he was awarded the orde Pour le Mérite, the highest German military decoration. He died in 1915 in Hanover.
