Ágoston Trefort entered the service of the state in 1840. Together with Joseph Eötvös and Ladislaus Szalay he published "Budapesti Szemle". In 1846 he became Minister of Trade, but during the same year he resigned and he didn't return to ploitics until 1860.

In 1865 he entered the House of Representatives, where he belonged to the part of Ferenc Deák. In 1872 he became Minister of Education and he held this post until his death in 1888. He set up a system of education that survived mostly unchanged until 1945.
