Karl Ritter von La Roch was the son of a police inspector from Berlin. He studied veterinary medicine, but he decided to go to the stage and debuted in Dresden in 1811. After engagements in Lemberg, Königsberg and Weimar, where he studied the part of Mephistopheles with Goethe himself. He appeared as a visiting actor at the Burgtheater in Vienna in 1832 and was offered a contract for life there in 1833.

From 1841 until 1875 he also worked as a director for the Burgtheater. He was a very talented actor and also performed as an opera singer, but he wasn't good at learning his parts.
