Ludwig Gabillon came from a Huegenot family from Mecklenburg.
He grew up in Güstrow and from an early age he travelled as
an actor through Germany as part of Bethmann's Wandertruppe. In 1853 he was engaged at the Burgtheater in Vienna by Heinrich Laube. He also worked at the Burgtheater as a director from 1875 until 1895. Gabillon married the actress Zerline Würzburg and both were among the most famous actors of their time, Gabillon playing about a 300 parts. In Vienna a street was after him and his portrait is at the Burgschauspieltheatergalerie.
