Shura Serkassy was the son of a dentist and a piano teacher. During the Russian Revolution the family fled to the United States. He was a pupil of Joseph Hofmann at the Curtis Institute of Music.

Like Horowitz and Rubinstein he was among the most important pianists of the romantic school. He moved to London in 1961 and he gave concerts until the end of his life and made many recordings.
