Johann Conrad Develey grew up in Augsburg. In 1845 he started a mustard factory at the Kaufinger Strasse in Munich. His company was the first to produce the famous sweet mustard in a factory.

He became supplier to the court and in 1873 he received a medal at the World Exhibition in Vienna. After his death in 1886 his gravestone was paid for by king Ludwig II. He was buried at the Alte Südfriedhof in Munich. The Develey factory is now located in Unterhachning near Munich.
