Youngest son of the merchant Georg Blohm. He studied in Hannover and Zurich and worked as an engineer in Rostock and in Hamburg. In 1873 he went to London where he worked for several companies. He returned to Lübeck in 1876. He wanted to start a shipyard and moved to Hamburg, where he soon met Ernst Voss. Together they started the shipyard Blohm & Voss in 1877 with the financial help of Georg Blohm.

After a difficult start they built many ships and later also airplanes and Blohm & Voss became a large international company. Hermann Blohm married Emmi Alwine Westphal in 1880. He died in Hamburg in 1930.
