Ernst von Badel was the son of a judge from Ansbach. When he was fourteen he entered the Kunstschule in Nuremberg to stud drawing. He was also educated by Albert Christoph Reindel. He continued his studies in Munich where the architect Karl von Fischer was his teacher. After the death of his father in 1818 he was able to continue his studies after he received a grant from King Maximilian I. He refused a job offer from Leo von Klenze in 1820 because he didn't like Klenze's Gothic style. he entered the Art Academy where Wilhelm von Kobell, Andreas Seidl, Johann Nepomuk von Haller. and others were his teachers.

Between 1825 and 1827 he stayed in Italy and in Rome he met Bertel Thorvaldsen. He also knew Ludwig Schwanthaler und Heinrich Max, but artistically he was closest to the circle around Joseph Anton Koch. Back in Munich he married Karolina von Kohlhagen (1802-1894). They had seven children and one of them was the sculptor Heinrich von Bandel. From 1827 to 1834 he worked for C.D. Rauch at the Glyptothek in Munich. In 1834 he moved to Berlin to join the group around Rauch and Schadow.

After he received no commissions in Berlin he went to Hanover to work on the design of the Residenzschlosses (the residential palace) for king Wilhelm IV. From 1837 to 1846 he worked in Detmold on the Hermannsdenkmal. In 1846 he fell out with the Hermannsverein and he returned to Hanover. In 1861 he created the Schillerbrunnen in Hamburg-Harbach. It wasn't until the after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/1871 that the government provided new funding for the Hermannsdenkmal and he returned to Detmold to continue his work. The monument was unveiled in 1875. He visited Italy again in 1876 but he died on his way back to Hanover.
