Adalbert Matkowsky was educated as an actor in Berlin in 1877 and debuted at the Gesellschaftstheater Urania in Berlin. He soon obtained an engagement in Dresden and from 1886 to 1889 he worked at the Staatstheater in Hamburg.

In 1889 he moved to Berlin where he was employed at the Königlichen Schauspielhaus. He was the first person to become Königlich preußischen Hofschauspieler (Royal Prussian Court Actor).
