Walter Courvoisier was the son of the surgeon Ludwig George Courvoisier (1843-1918). He studied medicin, but after his promotion he went to Munich in 1902 to study music. He was a student of Selmar Bagge and Ludwig Thuille and he married Thuille's daughter.

He wrote three operas and many other works. At the Akademie der Tonkunst in Munich he taught theory and composition. He was buried at the Waldfriedhof in Munich in the grave of Thuille.
