Georg, Prinz von Bayern

PRINCE, CLERGYMAN (BAVARIA)
BORN 2 Apr 1880, München, Bayern - DIED 31 May 1943, Roma, Lazio
BIRTH NAME Georg Franz Josef Luitpold Maria von Bayern
GRAVE LOCATION Roma, Lazio: Campo Santo Teutonico, Via di Porta Cavalleggeri

Son of Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and grandson of Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria. His mother was Gisela, the daughter of emperor Frncis Jospeh of Austria and his wife, the empress Elisabeth.

He joined the Bavarian army in 1897 and was promoted to Major in 1906. In 1912 he married Isabella, archduchess of Austria at Schloss Schönbrunn in Vienna. They seperated during their honeymoon and were divorced in 1913. The Roman Church annulled the marriage because it hadn't been consumated.

During the First World War he saw action at the Eastern Front and he was decorated with the Iron Cross. The woman he supposedly loved had married an officer, but nonetheless he had a son with her, Franz Hans Leopold Maria Wittelsbach (1919-1999). His family still prevented him from marrying her. This made him decide to leave the Bavarian royal family and leave the country.

He studied theology in Innsbruck and became a priest in 1921. He went to Rome, where he graduated at the Papal Academy. He held several positions at the Vatican until his death in 1943.
