Son of the actor Friedrich Dahn and his first wife Constance Le Gaye. The author Felix Dahn is his brother. He learned acting from his mother and later from Sophie Schröder.

Whe he was seventene years old he was engaged at the Hoftheater in Weimar. He worked there until 1864 and played many Shakespeare parts. In 1865 he moved to Prussian Court Theatre in Berlin. There he married and in 1874 he had a son.

From 1874 to 1877 he worked in St. Petersburg. In 1878 he was engaged at the Court Theatre in Munich. During his later years he suffered from bad health and he died in Munich in 1889, aged only 55.
