Son of a secretary at the Bavarian Ministry of Justice. Although he was physically weak, he was a hard worker all his life. Already at the gymnasium he treated small surgical problems of his fellow students. He studied medicin at the University in Munich and was promoted in 1853. He travelled to Paris, where he worked for Auguste Nélaton, Charles Marie Édouard Chassaignac and Jules Germain François Maisonneuve. In Berlin he visited Bernhard von Langenbeck.

In 1857 he settled in Munich as a private teacher for surgery and opthalmology. He founded a private hospital and refused a position at the university of Zürich. In 1860 he became a professor for Surgery in Munich and he held this position until 1890.
