Oldest son of chef executioner Charles Sanson, who executed Louis XVI. Together with his brother he assisted his father with the executions. His brother died after a fall from a scaffold and in April 1793 he succeeded his father. In October of that year he executed Marie-Antoinette, who asked his pardon after she stepped on his foot on her way to the scaffold. He was married to Marie-Louise Damidot.
