Gustave Jundt studied in Paris, where he was a pupil of Jean Michel Prosper Guérin and Michel Martin Drolling. From 1856 onwards he exhibited at the Salon in Paris.

In 1872 his painting "L'Arbre de Noël" was withdrawn because Alsace was no longer part of France since the Franco-Prussian War. He responded with a painting named "Vive la France ! Au revoir l’Alsace" and in 1873 he was invited to the Salon again. In 1880 he received the Légion d'honneur.
