John Adam Houston descended from the Nasmyth clan of artists. He was educated at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh where Sir William Allan was his teacher. He also studied in Paris and Germany. Because of family matters he returned to Edinburgh in 1841 and there he worked as a professional painter.

He is known for large canvasses depicting the English Civil War, but also for the landscapes that he painted on the continent.
