Franz von Paula Hocheder studied in Salzburg. He worked as a professor at the Institutsgymnasium München until he became the director of the gymnasium in Würzburg in 1819. In 1824 he returned to Munich where he was the director of the new Ludwigsgymnasiums until 1842. He had a hard time because there was opposition against the humanistic teaching program, professors were coming and going in rapid succession and there were epidemics.

In 1842 King Ludwig I decided that the Benedictines should lead the gymnasium and Hocheder became a professor of Philology and esthetics at Munich University. He also became a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. In 1844 he died in Munich.
