George Greville Wellesley was the third and youngest son of Gerald Valerian Wellesley, a brother of the Duke of Wellington. In 1828 he entered the navy and in 1838 he became a lieutenant. He served in the East Indies and in the Pacific.

In 1853 he married Elizabeth Doughty Lukin (d.1906). They had a daughter, Olivia Georgina Wellesley (1857-1956). In 1862 he became the commander of the Indian Navyuntil it was abolished. In 1869 Admiral superintendent at Portsmouth. During the 1870 he was Commander-in-chief in North America and in the West Indies.

In 1879 he was appointed Commissioner of the Admiralty and in 1888 Commissioner of the Patriotic Fund. He died in 1901 in London.
