Hélène Grégoire came from a family of peasants. She lived in the United States for a while, before she returned to Europe. She opened a café restaurant in Geneva. In 1964 she tried her luck as an author and her autobiographical novel "Poignée de terre" was a success. In it she described her youth in the Mayenne. Many other novels followed. The last years of her life she lived at La Blosserie, her house at Founex in Switzerland. In 1999 she posthumously received the Prix Cécile-Gagnon.
