Hélène Grégoire came from a family of peasants. She lived in
the United States for a while, before she returned to Europe.
She opened a café restaurant in Geneva. In 1964 she tried her
luck as an author and her autobiographical novel "Poignée de
terre" was a succes. In it she described her youth in the Mayenne.
Many other novels followed. The last years of her life she lived
at La Blosserie, her house at Founex in Switzerland. In 1999
she posthumously received the Prix Cécile-Gagnon.
