Anton Höchl was the son of Joseph Höchl, who owned a large building company as well as a brick factory in Bogenhausen, Munich. After his father died in 1838 he inherited the company, but in 1841 he hired a manager to be able to dedicate himself to art.

In 1841 he travelled to the Rhine with E. Schleich, Spitzweg and Morgenstern. He made many drawings and kept a diary. With his wife he visited Paris. He was active as a painter and also played several musicial instruments. At his death he left his art collection to the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
