Julius Adam came from a family of painters. His father was Julius Adam (1826-1874) and his mother Theresa was the daughter of a merchant. Albrecht Adam was his grandfather.

He started as a landscape photographer. After he had worked in Rio de Janeiro for six years he settled in Munich and he studied paiting with Wilhelm von Diez at the Academy in Munich.

From 1882 onwards he started painting cats. His paitings became popular and he was known as "Katzen-Adam".
