Franz Abt studied theology and music in Leipzig at the time that Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy lived there. He worked as musical director in Bernburg and in Zürich, where he became very popular.

He continued his career in Braunschweig in 1852 where he was musical director for thirty years. He toured in France, England and Russia. His tour in the USA in 1872 was very successful with the public as well as the critics.

By 1882 his busy schedule had damaged his health and he retired to Wiesbaden. There he died in 1885.
