Johannes Arpe was educated at the Hamburger Schauspielschule, where Leopold Jessner was his teacher. He debuted in 1915 at the Thalia Theatre and he worked as an actor and as a director in Flensburg.

In 1923 he founded the Communist Protection Association of German actors. After the Second World War he worked as a stage director in Chemnitz and Leipzig. From 1954 to 1958 he was general manager of the stages in Leipzig. At the same time he was still active as an actor. During the last years of his life he concentrated on movies.
