Paul Thévenin was born into a family of musicians. His father was the composer Alexandre Thévenin. After his classical studies he entered the conservatory. He was a promising musician, but he turned to painting and studied at the École des beaux-arts de Lyon. In 1928 he exhibited at the Salon du Sud-Est.
Apart from his painting he also continued his musical career and he became a member of the orchestre de l'opéra de Lyon and he performed in many countries. He travelled to Morocco to trace the steps of Delacroix and Matisse and in 1936 he returned to Lyon.
In 1949 he travelled to Sweden and in 1950 he died in a gas accident at his studio in Saint-Just. In 1952 a retrospective in his honour was organised at the Salon du Sud-Est.
