Son of immigrants from Catalonia and Italy. When he was twelve years old he entered the conservatory in Buenos Aires. In 1937 his ballet " Panambí" premiered successfully. In 1942 he received a grant from the the Guggenheim Foundation that enabled him to study with Aaron Copland in the USA.

In 1945 he was back in Buenos Aires, where he became a professor at two institutions. In 1970 he settled in Switzerland, where he died in 1983.
