Daughter of the actors Ludwig Gabillon and Zerlin Würzburg. In her younger years she tried her hand as an illustrator. In 1881 she married the author Anton Bettelheim, with whom she had three children. In their house at the Weimarer Strasse 71 in Döblin she and her husband received many guests. She started writing herself and published her stories and essays. She was best known for her descriptions of the theatre in Vienna.

Her son Ludwig was an actor and an economist. Because her husband, who had died in 1930, had been Jewish, Ludwig and his sister Friederike were deported to Theresienstadt and murdered. Helene survived the war and died in 1946, aged 88.
