Anthony Devas studied at the Slade School in London (1928-1931). There he met the artist and writer Nicolette MacNamara who became his wife (her sister Caitlin married Dylan Thomas).

He was soon successful as a portrait painter and from 1940 onwards he exhibited at the Royal Academy. In 1953 he was elected into the Academy. His work was exhibited at the Leicester Galleries and at the National Gallery.

His daughter Emma (b.1936) married Lord Monson in 1955 and had three sons with him. After several years of ill health he died in 1958, aged only 47.
