Charlotte Basté came from an artistic family. From 1884 until 1886 she held an engagement in St. Petersburg (where she was born). In 1886 she went to Dresden and there she soon convinced the public in the parts of Nora and Salome.
Basté rejected offers from Berlin and Vienna and worked for decades at the Staatsoper in Dresden, where she became a member of honour. In 1912 she married the author Franz Wallner and she left the stage.
