Otto Schwerdgeburth was the son of the engraver Carl August Schwerdgeburth from his father's second marriage. He was educated by his father and by Friedrich Preller. From 1856 to 1860 he studied at the Academy in Antwerp. From 1860 onwards he worked in Weimar, except for a stay in Rome from 1865 to 1866. He mostly created historical paintings of which few have survived. His style shows the influence of Ferdinand Pauwels (1830-1904).
