Son of a sea captain. He studied philology in Vienna, but soon changed to the Music Academy in that city. He took singing lessons with professor Jekelius in Berlin. In 1930 he debuted in the theatre in Meissen. His carerer took him to Hannover, Salzburg, Berlin, München and other cities. In 1936 he had his first movie part in Reinhold Schünzel's "Das Mädchen Irene". Many movies followed.

In Munich he performed at the cabaret "Die Schaubude" with his first wife, the actress Hertha Saal. After she died in 1964 he married Corinna Genest in 1965. His second wife was 29 years his junior. He had a daughter from his first wife, Christine. After his death in 2001 he was buried beside Hertha Saal at the Waldfriedhof in Munich.
