Heinz Drache came from Essen. He worked in theatres in Nürnberg, Düsseldorf and Berlin before he met Gustaf Gründgens in Berlin. Gründgens took him to Düsseldorf after the war and there he appeared in Schiller's "Die Raüber". In Düsseldorf he worked with Käthe Gold, Marianne Hoppe and Elisabeth Flickenschild.

During the 1950s he appeared in several television movies and in the 1960s the Edgar Wallace movies made him famous. From 1985 to 1989 he was a police inspector in the famous "Tatort" series.

In 1957 he married Rosemarie Nordmann (1928-2006). They had three children. He already had a daughter named Angelika from an affair with the actress Edith Teichmann (b.1921).
