Charlotte Pfeiffer was the daughter of an estate agent. She was educated at the court theatre in Munich and from 1818 onwards she played leading parts in tragedies in several theatres. In 1825 she married Christian Birch, a historian and critic from Copenhagen who lived in Munich.

She continued her acting career and from 1837 until 1843 she was the manager of the theatre in Zürich. From 1844 until her death she worked for the Royal Theatre in Berlin, where she dramatized popular novels and also wrote many original plays. Her daughter Wilhelmine von Hillern was also an actress and later became a novelist.
