Younger brother of Wener von Siemens and the eighth of the fourteen Siemens children. In 1853 he went to St. Petersburg to start the branch of the Siemens & Halske company that was to build the Russian telegraph network.

In 1869 he moved to England to work with his brother William and during the 1880s he worked in Russia once more. After his brother Werner died in 1892 he became the director of Siemens & Halske. He held this position until he resigned in 1904. In 1895 he was enobled by Tsar Nicholas II.
