Son of the John Douglas, 9th Marquess of Queensberry and Sybil Montgomery. He was the brother of the infamous Alfred Douglas, who caused the imprisonment of Oscar Wilde.

He was on bad terms with his father and once even fought with him on the street at Picadilly, London. In 1900 he succeeded him to the baronetcy. On 11 Sep 1893 he had married Anna Maria Walters. In 1917 his wife died and on 4 Dec 1918 he married Mary Louise Bickel (d.1956). His son Francis from his first marriage became the 11th Marquess after he died in 1920.
