Gertrude Falkenstein was the daughter of an apothecary from Bonn. Her father died early and her mother married again. On 29 May 1822 she married Karl Michael Lehmann (1787-1882), a lieutenant in the Prussian army. They had two children.

Friedrich Wilhelm I of Hessen met her in Bonn. They started an affair and Friedrich Wilhelm persuaded her husband to divorce her. Only after she converted from the Catholic to the Reformed faith they were able to marry in 1832. By that time two of their nine children were born.

After Friedrich Wilhelm I lost his title in 1866 they went in exile in Austria in Bohemia. They lived at Schloss Horowitz and in Prague. Friedrich Wilhelm died in 1875 and she continued to live in Prague. After her death she was buried in Kassel. The remains of her daughter Alexandrina, who had died in childbirth in 1871, were buried next to her in 1884.
