Rudolf Lipschitz studied mathematics at the Univesity of Königsberg. He continued his studies in Berlin and was promoted in 1853 by Gustav Dirichlet and Martin Ohm. In 1857 he became a private teacher in Berlin. He married Ida Pascha (1832-1922). In 1862 he was appointed professor in Breslau.

In 1864 he moved to Bonn. In Bonn Felix Klein was his pupil and his assistant. He was the rector of the University of Bonn from 1874 to 1875. His "Lehrbuch der Analysis" was published in two volumes in 1877 and 1880. Om 1883 he was elected into the Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina. He died in 1903 in Bonn.
