Third daughter of the banker Salomon Heine from Hamburg. She was a cousin of the poet Heinrich Heine. He loved her but she didn't love him back. Amalie figures in many of his poems and he suffered from his infatuation. On August 15, 1821 she married John Friedländer.

Her daughter Elisabeth married Shakespeare translator Friedrich August Leo (1820-1898). The actor Theodor Wolff (1848-1911) was her grandson.
