Karl Wilhelm Leopold Bennewitz von Loefen served as an officer in the army before he decided to become an artist in 1849. He studied with Schirmer in Berlin and with Zimmermann in Munich. After travelling in Scotland, Tyrol and Italy he settled in Berlin in 1856.

Initially he painted mountains, but he became best known for his landscapes. His son Carl was also a well known painter.
