Leonie Rysanek was the daughter of a stonemason. She studied singing at the Academy in Vienna with Alfred Jerger and Rudolf Grossman. Before she finished her studies, she debuted at the Landestheater in Innsbruck in 1949 as Agathe in "Der Freischütz". She was engaged in Saarbrücken and in Munich. In 1950 she married Rudolf Grossmann.

From 1955 to 1991 she worked for the State Opera in Vienna. In 1959 she replaced Maria Callas as Lady MacBeth at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. She would appear more than 300 times at the MET until 1996. She also appeared at the Festspiele in Bayreuth and Salzburg several times.

In 1968 she married the musicologist Ernst Ludwig Gaussmann.
