Willy Millowitsch debuted in 1922 at the Volkstheater in Cologne when he was 13 years old. In 1940 he took over the management of the theatre from his father and he worked as manager, director and actor.

In 1949 he had his first movie part and on 27 Oct 1953 the German WDR broadcasted his "Etappenhasen". It was the first time that a theatre production was broadcated live on television. He spoke in his local dialect in it and this was criticized, but WDR broadcasted many more of his productions.

Towards the end of the 1980s he had a major part in a crime series on German television. His children Peter, Mariele and Marie-Luise all worked in the world of television and movies. After his death his funeral service was broadcasted live from the cathedral in Cologne.
