Gùnther Genssler was the son of a goldspinner. He was a teacher at the Gelehrtenschule des Johanneum in Hamburg and a member of the Hamburger Künstlerverein from 1832 onwards.

He was best known for his portraits. In later years he gave drawing lessons at the Schule der Patriottische Gesellschaft. For his lectures on art history he received a gold medal in 1867. Work: "Mitgleider des Hamburger Kunstvereins im Jahre 1840".
