Emily Flöge met Gustav Klimt after her sister Helene married Klimt's brother Ernst in 1891. After Ernst's death in 1892 Gustav Klimt was the guardian of their daughter Helene.

Emilie was the model for several of Klimt's pictures, most famously "The Kiss". He designed clothes for the fashion business at the Mariahilderstrasse 1b that she ran with her sisters from 1904 to 1938.

Emily and Klimt have often been assumed to be lovers but this is not certain and Klimt certainly had other lovers. She certainly was his muse and she inherited half of his estate when he suddenly died in 1918.
