Pupil of Gerard van Honthorst and painter of landscapes and allegorical subjects. He was ennobled in 1653 and one of the leading German artists of his time. Nowadays he is mainly remembered for his "Teutsche Academie Der Bau-, Bild- und Mahlerey-Künste" (1675, Nürnberg), a work of over 260 pages of engraved plates. In 1662 he became the first director of the Academy at Nürnberg.
