Friedrich Schleiermacher came from a family of theologists. He studied in Halle and from 1796 to 1802 he frequented the salons of the romantic era in Berlin. After living in Würzburg and Halle he returned to Berlin in 1807. There he became the preacher of the Dreifaltigkeitskirche in 1809.

In 1810 he was appointed professor at the University of Berlin and in 1815 he became its rector. In 1811 he became a member of the Academy of Science. He died in 1834 in Berlin and his funeral was attended by over 30.000 people.
